Social assistance and the’dependency syndrome’

This policy brief looks at pros and cons of social assistance and the factors that ┬áhinder the progress of social assistance programmes, including the ‘dependency syndrome’. It argues that in some instances social assistance in chronic poverty situations can actually assists beneficiaries to be less dependent.
